Chapter 1
What is TikTok Shop?
TikTok Shop lets sellers list products that customers can buy without leaving the social media platform.
It launched in the US in September 2023 and expanded into the UK and other global markets from there, growing into one of the fastest-adopted social commerce platforms to date.
Shoppers can buy four ways: through live shopping (a seller or creator selling in real time, similar to a livestreamed QVC), shoppable videos (tapping a product tag inside a regular TikTok video), a product showcase on a seller’s profile, and a dedicated shop tab for browsing, orders, and checkout. All of it happens inside TikTok itself, with no redirect to an external site.
TikTok Shop runs as separate, legally distinct programs per country rather than one global marketplace, so a seller registers and sells in each market individually.
Chapter 2
Why sell on TikTok Shop?
TikTok Shop’s core pitch is that people buy differently there. Three out of four TikTok Shop users say they’re more likely to purchase a product they’ve seen on the platform, and the “TikTok made me buy it” trend has racked up 14 billion views globally. Checkout happens in-app, with no redirect to an external site, which converts better than a typical social ad.
Growth can be sudden rather than gradual.
One hairbrush reportedly sold $20 million worth of units on TikTok Shop in a single month.Benefit Cosmetics, working with a TikTok Shop partner agency on live shopping and creator content, saw sales grow 32%. Beauty brand The Beauty Crop saw a 5x increase in product views and a 37% repeat purchase rate after committing to regular live shows. And perfume brand DXB saw product impressions rise 480% year on year during a peak shopping period.
Beauty and personal care led the platform’s early category sales, but food, home goods, electronics, and collectibles have all found real traction since. TikTok’s own team has said storage bins and cleaning products regularly do well, categories nobody would guess from the platform’s reputation.
Chapter 3
Eligibility and requirements
To sell on TikTok Shop, a business needs to:
UK sellers need to:
- Register as a seller through TikTok Shop’s own Seller Center (each country needs a separate registration)
- Provide standard business registration details
- Link the TikTok Shop account to an existing TikTok profile, or create one
- Agree to TikTok Shop’s product and content policies
Most product categories are open. TikTok Shop maintains a short prohibited list (adult content and alcohol, as of the most recent check) and a longer restricted list, where products are allowed but need extra documentation before they can go live.
There’s no minimum size or follower count to register. One TikTok Shop agency partner has said sellers with over £1 million in annual online sales may be eligible for a dedicated TikTok Account Manager, which can make setup smoother. Below that threshold, Seller Center’s self-serve tools are the main resource.
Chapter 4
Fees and commission
TikTok Shop charges no listing fee or subscription in any market. Instead, it charges a referral fee for each order: 6% in the US for most categories (5% for precious jewelry), and 9% in the UK. New sellers in the US get a discounted rate of roughly 3% for their first 30 days. The referral fee already includes payment processing, so there’s no separate transaction charge on top.
Two costs sit outside the referral fee.
- If a seller uses TikTok Shop’s affiliate program to work with creators, they set the commission paid to each creator, typically somewhere between 5% and 25%, although it’s entirely optional.
- If a seller opts into Fulfilled by TikTok (TikTok manages storage and shipping), that adds a per-unit logistics fee on top. It’s roughly $3 to $4 depending on weight, with a period of free storage included.
Chapter 5
How to get started
- Register. Sign up through TikTok Shop’s Seller Center for the relevant country, with standard business details.
- Link your TikTok account. Connect the shop to an existing TikTok profile, or create one, so you can tag products in videos and lives.
- List your products. Upload a catalog with clear images and descriptions. TikTok Shop’s own tools flag missing information and suggest fixes.
- Choose a fulfillment method. Pick self-fulfillment, connect a 3PL, or opt into Fulfilled by TikTok.
- Go live or start posting. Sales come from a mix of organic video, live shopping, and (optionally) paid ads and creator partnerships.
- Track and adjust. Seller Center’s built-in analytics show what’s converting, so sellers can double down on what’s working.
Chapter 6
Challenges to plan for
Compliance is actively enforced
TikTok Shop tracks seller performance closely. Responding within 48 hours, shipping on time, and maintaining product accuracy all feed into a seller rating that affects how much the algorithm favors a shop’s listings. Repeated violations can lead to account suspension.
Shipping runs on strict timeframes
Sellers who use their own fulfillment must deliver within 15 calendar days, and orders not shipped within the required window are automatically cancelled and refunded. TikTok manages tighter SLAs itself when a seller opts into Fulfilled by TikTok.
Virality is a double-edged sword
A single video or live session can send demand far beyond what normal stock levels can support. Running out of stock after a product goes viral costs sales, damages the seller rating, and burns the relationship with any creator who helped drive the spike. One agency’s advice for new sellers is to narrow launch focus to just two to five hero SKUs rather than listing a full catalog at once, which makes demand easier to forecast and stock for.
Affiliate and creator relationships take real management
Commission rates, creator selection, and briefing all affect results, and TikTok Shop’s own team has said the biggest single mistake sellers make is treating a creator partnership like a generic ad buy rather than something built around the brand.
Another channel means another storefront to keep accurate
The same challenge shows up on every marketplace: another set of stock levels, listings, and orders to keep in sync as volume grows, which is exactly where manual processes tend to break first.
Chapter 7
How Linnworks helps you manage TikTok Shop
Sellers can create new listings on TikTok Shop directly from Linnworks, with pricing kept in sync across every other channel from the moment a listing goes live. As sales happen, whether on TikTok Shop or anywhere else, stock levels update automatically across every connected channel, which prevents overselling without any manual checking. Orders arrive the moment a customer buys, already sitting alongside every other order a seller has to process.
From there, Linnworks handles shipping mapping and label creation, and marks the order as dispatched with tracking details sent back to TikTok Shop.
This matters more for sellers managing live selling or viral spikes than it would on a slower-moving channel. A platform that only updates stock in batches leads to stale inventory records that turn a viral moment into a stockout.
TikTok Shop has become Linnworks’ fastest-adopted channel, growing more than 400% in a year, across both the UK and US.

Beauty and personal care led early platform sales, followed by fashion, food and beverage, and home goods. That said, TikTok’s own team points to categories like cleaning products, collectibles, and storage solutions doing well too — strong content and community fit matter more than category.
No, but it helps. TikTok Shop’s affiliate program lets sellers offer a commission to creators who drive sales, and TikTok’s own data shows users are significantly more likely to trust a brand and buy a product when a creator is involved.
