Automatically Assigning Packaging to Orders

Linnworks allows for the intelligent automatic assignment of packaging to your open orders. Linnworks uses the weights, dimensions, and default packaging groups of your order items to find the correct Packaging Group and Type for your order.

Item Default Packaging Groups

Every stock item in Linnworks can be allocated to a specific Packaging Group. Dependent on the selected Auto Assignment method Linnworks can then use this information to find the best packaging group/type for the order when an order is downloaded and saved.

Setting Packaging Group Prevalence

When an order contains more than one stock item, it's likely that different items will be associated with different Packaging Groups. So that Linnworks can accurately select the correct group, you can assign a prevalence number to each group. Once added, Linnworks will select the Group with the highest Prevalence number first when attempting to allocate a packaging type. If that group doesn't contain a type that can be assigned to the order, the group with the next highest prevalence number will be used.

To set an order prevalence for your packaging groups:

  1. Select Shipping
  2. Select Packaging Groups
  3. Double click on the cell in the Prevalence column for the required Packaging Group and enter a number

Auto Assignment Methods

You can control which method Linnworks uses to automatically set the packaging group for the order from the items contained within the order
  1. Select Settings
  2. Select General Settings
  3. Select your required option from the Packaging Selection Method dropdown list in the Units of Measurement section.

Legacy Desktop Compatible - Auto assigns the packaging type for an order based on the preferred packaging group of the first order item found by the system. The system works out the packaging type based on the total weight of all order items and chooses the packaging type which suits the total weight based on the From Weight and To Weight specification of a packaging type

Take Maximum Dimensions of Order Items - Packaging groups (as defined by order items) are checked in Prevalence order (highest number first) to compare maximum Order Item dimensions to the Packaging Type dimensions to work out the correct Packaging Type to assign to the order. This method will initially retrieve the maximum Height, Width and Depth dimensions from all of the order items and use this to find the appropriate Packaging type that the items will fit within.

Stack Items Vertically - Packaging groups (as defined by order items) are checked in Prevalence order (highest number first) to compare combined Order Item height and maximum width/depth dimensions to the Packaging Type dimensions to work out the correct Packaging Type to assign to the order. This method will initially retrieve the sum of Order Item Height along the maximum Width and Depth dimensions from all of the order items and use this to find the appropriate Packaging type that the items will fit within.

Fit into Packaging by Weight - All Packaging groups (default order item group is not prioritised) are checked in Prevalence order (highest number first) to compare combined Order Item weight to the Packaging Type weight range to work out the correct Packaging Type to assign to the order. This method will initially retrieve the sum of Order Item Weights from all of the order items and use this to find the appropriate Packaging type that is within the weight range. 

Fit graphically by all dimensions (3D)All Packaging groups in the System are checked to compare combined Order Item dimensions to work out the correct Packaging Type will fit the best and assign it to the order.
