Getting Started: Creating inventory
There are two ways for creating new items in your Linnworks inventory. Below you will find instructions for both options - manual and via import - together with a short description of different types of items and where to find further information on them.
If you have active items on your integrated Sales Channels and want to create inventory based on the details on the channel, check the page under Next steps.

Creating items manually
To add a new item to your My Inventory, click on the Add New button. This will open a popup asking to fill in three fields: Item number, Item title and Barcode.
The Item number field will have an auto-populated entry, which you can change to whichever SKU you want to use for the item as long as it is unique within your Linnworks account.
Item number and Item title fields are mandatory to be filled in for the item to be created. The title can later be edited, whether needed.
After clicking Add, the Product Details screen for your new item will be opened. Here you can add any additional details to your item. Most data in this screen can be edited whenever needed and is accessible by clicking on the item SKU in your My Inventory screen. Creating items in bulk
The manual process for creating new items is very time-consuming when you have thousands of SKUs to add.
Linnworks has a feature called Import Data tool, which enables you to add the needed data into the system in bulk, as well as execute bulk actions like creating items, deleting, linking and more.
Linnworks Import Data tool works with CSV and TXT files, but it is recommended to prefer using CSVs. We have compiled a solution article with a list of tips on working with CSV files, which will help you create a file compatible with our Import Data tool.
After creating a CSV file containing the items and item details you want to add to Linnworks, go to Settings > Import Data > Import now.
- Select the type Inventory Import
- Upload your CSV file
- Map your file columns with Linnworks columns
- Click Run Now
NB! If your integrated Sales Channels already have items listed, then there are ways to create your inventory based on the sales channel details. The details and the method that can be used depends on your Sales Channel. Please see Downloading items from channels under Next steps for further information.
Types of inventory items:
You can have three types of items in Linnworks: single items, composites (bundles) and variation items.
- Creating and editing single items has already been covered previously. See here for full details on managing inventory items via My Inventory screen.
- Composite items are virtual items consisting of bundles of different items or are multi-packs of another item. Click here to learn more about composites.
- Variation items group together items that are related, but differ by at least one attribute. Here you can learn more about variation items.
If your stock includes perishable products, then you can use batched items, which allow you to set Expire by and Sell by dates, Priority and the availability status to your item batches. Inventory batching is explained fully here.
