Senior Database Administrator: £45-60k

As one of a small team of Database Engineers you will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance and performance of the SQL Servers. This is a hands-on role, requiring proven technical skills, as well as excellent communication and documentation skills. In addition to the role foundations there will be strong collaboration with the in-house development team to advise on best practice, but also involvement in providing knowledge and support to our SQL orientated infrastructure.

What you'll be doing:

  • Acquire detailed understanding of the current Database architecture and its usage patterns by applications
  • Understand the workflows and needs of end users in order to develop a fit-for-purpose DB architecture
  • Make efficient use of cloud resources
  • Optimise database queries to minimise the load on servers
  • Work along-side the product development teams to plan features with software engineers and jointly create efficient solutions to problems
  • Implement metrics to actively monitor key components of the databases and appropriate sensors and alarms to proactively manage them
  • Automate repetitive DBA tasks, such as backup and restoration or the creation of new databases; constantly improve processes
  • Coach other members of the Database team to improve
  • Perform Windows and Linux Server Administrator operational duties as required to support the running of the databases
  • Perform system metrics analysis and reports key metrics back to management
  • Troubleshoot servers
  • Innovate and experiment with new technologies to maximise the opportunities we can take with our database and platform and be mindful of what could make it better tomorrow
  • Respond to incidents to avoid system outages or restore availability to meet service level objectives
  • Perform root cause analysis for incidents and implement changes to prevent them
  • Perform patching ensuring minimal downtime and leveraging HA services where possible
  • Perform occasional maintenance tasks outside normal office hours as required

  • Thorough experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Extensive SQL and T-SQL knowledge
  • A deep understanding of internal DB engines and performance
  • Windows Server Operating Systems
  • Experience with AWS
  • Database Installation and Configuration
  • Database Backup and Restoration
  • Database Disaster recovery
  • Database Performance Tuning
  • Scalability and handling seasonal variation and load spikes
  • Data structure, table and index design
  • Report writing and ad-hoc data manipulation
  • Good collaboration skills with software engineers and business stakeholders
  • Ability to articulate complex problems in simple terms
  • Ability to train and teach others verbally and through documentation of procedures

Nice to haves:
